Bridge Stories

That's Up There

Playing match point, my left-hand opponent (LHO) opened a strong 2 Spades, partner passed, and RHO bid 3 diamonds. LHO rebid spades, RHO rebid diamonds, and following a Blackwood sequence they settled for 5 spades, admitting they were missing 2 aces. They were vulnerable and we were not.

I held  --  x  Axx  Jxxxxxxxx  and decided to sacrifice at 6 clubs. The opponents doubled. Partner had  xxx  KQxxxx  xx  Ax.

LHO led the Ace of hearts, an obvious singleton, and then attempted to reach her partner with a spade, which I ruffed. I led a club to dummy's Ace, the King and Queen fell. I cashed dummy's K and Q of hearts, discarding my 2 diamond losers, and claimed.
